Strengthening Families for the Future

By Barb Steep, CH&E Coordinator, PSSP

Strengthening Families for the Futures is coming to CAMH, Queen Street site soon. This proven prevention program provides parents and/or caregivers and their children age 7-11 with ways to make their families stronger and more resilient. This year the program is being offered through a partnership between CAMH’s Child, Youth and Family program, CAMH’s Family Addiction Service, Native Child and Family Service of Toronto and Family Association for Mental Health Everywhere (FAME).

What is Strengthening Families for the Future?

It is a fun, interactive program for adults and children through which families learn skills in parenting and family life, communication, problem solving, anger management and other areas of family functioning. Families meet for three hours each week. In the first hour, dinner is provided. For the second hour, parents and children meet in separate rooms to participate in skill building activities. In the third hour, parents and children come back together in a family session, to practice what they learned in their separate parent and child sessions. Childcare is provided during the second and third hours for the other children in the families under the age of 7.

The program helps families in very practical ways, assisting them to get to the program, providing them with a family meal and an opportunity to spend “quality” time together, and modelling healthy family communication. Family members have the opportunity to build a network of support amongst themselves, particularly as the program is offered in their local community.

The program is delivered by a team of facilitators from agencies that provide different and complementary services. This approach increases families’ access to a broad range of skills and resources that go beyond the information provided through the program. The opportunity to build relationships with local providers also improves access in times of need.

Parents and children who attend Strengthening Families for the Future genuinely enjoy the program and tell us over and over again how much they are getting out of it.

Some comments from participants:

“One of the things I liked best about the program is the group leaders in their teaching. When practicing the material they correct and re direct us to make sure we get the full benefit.”

“The program is helping me to be open minded to children. I like the dinner selections, how well organized the program is and meeting the other parents.”

“The teachers are very knowledgeable and I am learning how to handle child behaviours that are difficult for me. I also like that everybody respects each other.”

“What I like best is going over new tools for communicating that I can use at home.”

Strengthening Families for the Future is free of charge and includes a family meal as well as free child care for children under age 7. The program is held at 60 White Squirrel Way, on our Queen St site.
